Dancehall deejay and high roller, Mavado, whose given name is David Brooks, left the island last week shortly after the police indicated an interest in speaking with him amid rising tensions in the inner-city community of Cassava Piece in St Andrew, from where the entertainer hails, and where at least one member of his family reportedly still lives. The tensions appear to have all arisen after the deejay, the self-styled ‘Gully God’, was shot at two Saturdays ago following a reported physical altercation with another person of influence in Cassava Piece. After the initial altercation, Mavado’s vehicle was reportedly peppered with bullets with him inside and only fortunately emerging unharmed, excepting perhaps for his personal pride and longtime standing as the ‘big man’ of the community. Three of the four suspects who were being investigated in connection with the upsurge in violence in Cassava Piece, St. Andrew, have been released. The men, who are family members and associates of dancehall entertainer, Mavado, were released on the weekend. Despite the men being released, news came on Monday that the entertainer's 17 year old son remains in custody, as cops investigate recent cases of murder and shootings in Cassava Piece. Five men, including Mavado's son, were picked up at his Norbrook, St. Andrew residence last Tuesday. The cops have sent out an advisory urging Mavado to report to them for questioning in connection with the violence in Cassava Piece. He is currently overseas. His attorneys are reportedly making arrangements for his return. Superintendent Glenford Miller, head of the St. Andrew North Police, has warned that investigators will not wait indefinitely for the artiste to surrender to them.
