Former Portmore Empire Popcaan recently told BBC 1XTRA that is hated by mentor Vybz Kartel due to his mainstream success. "Dancehall artistes don't like the ones who are progressive. A controversial figure and a superstar in his homeland of Jamaica, Vybz Kartel was hailed as one of the leading new artists to emerge from the dancehall scene following the release of his 2003 debut album, Up 2 Di Time. Born and raised in the Waterford district of Jamaica, Kartel was only 12 when he released his first single, "Fat Women," under the name Adi Banton. Alozade’s interest in the dancehall scene prompted him to abandon his UK-based computer studies and pursue his aspirations as a DJ. On his return to Jamaica he linked up with the Stone Love crew who released his debut ‘Top Of The Line’ - indicating his beginnings as a ‘dancehall don’. Alozade’s follow-up, ‘Mr Mention’, was produced by Dennis ‘Star’ Hayes and proved to be the forerunner to a series of local hits. The producer Byron Murray offered to act as Alozade’s manager and released his chart-topping hit, ‘Street Dreams’, on the In The Streetz label. National Security Minister, Robert Montague says the Government’s response to crime will be based on facts and firm intelligence. “It will not be a knee jerk response. It will be deliberate, studied and targeted. The illegal gun and gunmen are our targets.” The Minister made the statement at the United District Constables Association (UDCA) 37th Anniversary Church Service, held at the Portmore New Testament Church of God on June 18. Minister Montague was speaking against the back drop of the recent surge in incidents of crime and what he describes as the twin problem of a proliferation of guns and a lack of information from the citizenry. “The number one twin problem that drives crime is the illegal gun and lack of information,” he said. United States-based Jamaican singer Nadiva Devereaux (given name Narda Malcolm) has teamed with her sibling Neisha Robinson-Reid for her latest project, the thought-provoking single, Don't Hate. The song, produced by Nadiva on her Nadiva Music label, is based on the sisters' formative years in Roehampton, St James, before Nadiva migrated to the US. "This song means a lot to both of us, it's very personal. It's about our struggles growing up in Jamaica," Nadiva, who is now a professor at North Carolina Central University, told THE STAR. She said the collaboration came about without prior planning as she was unaware that her sister wanted to record with her, until she visited her in North Carolina last December.
