More than 1,265 people have been murdered since the start of the year; making the country’s murder rate increase by 26 percent over the similar period last year.
Nationwide News has obtained the latest crime statistics, from January up to October 15 this year, from the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s Corporate Communications Unit, CCU.
Superintendent Stephanie Lindsay is head of the CCU.
She says the St. James Police Division is leading the chart with 235 murders. It’s followed by Clarendon with 131, and St. Andrew South, 124 murders.

The murder tally continues to spiral as police figures show at least 38 homicides have been committed since the start of the year.
This is compared with 23 murders, 18 shootings and 16 robberies over the similar period last year.
Jamaica closed 2017 with 1,616 murders, one of the highest homicide figures on record.
St James in the western section of the island led with 335 murders, followed by Clarendon with 168 and Westmoreland with 147.
